Stains

If you’re seeing stains in your pool that won’t easily brush out, it might be time to refinish it. These stains are usually caused by organic material like algae, leaves, dirt or berries that have gotten into the pool and sunk to the bottom over time. Stains can come from different sources, but the most common are from rust and metals like iron or copper. Rust stains are brown or greenish and metal ones are blue-green, reddish and purplish. Stains can be removed using a variety of methods. Adding a little bit of granular chlorine to the stain and scrubbing it is often the easiest way to get rid of organic stains.

Rust

If rust is forming on the wall of your pool it may be a sign that you need to refinish it. Rust eats away at metal and can weaken the wall making it not strong enough to hold the water. Inspect the rust to see if it has eaten through in any significant areas. If it has gone deep into the metal, this is not a good thing and should be repaired right away. It’s important to note that the rust will not simply go away. It will actually start to grow and corrode the metal causing other problems. This is called a concrete cancer and it will eventually break down the steel reinforcing in the pool shell leading to costly repairs.

Cracks

If you’ve noticed cracks in your pool, they may be signs of a larger problem. Structural cracks are usually caused by a combination of movement in the ground or poor design and engineering. They can cause the structure to shift, exposing it to the elements and possible leaks that could damage the soil around and underneath your pool. These cracks can also be a sign of problems with the concrete surrounding the rebar and piping. Surface cracks, on the other hand, aren’t structural issues and are generally more cosmetic than serious. You’ll want to check for peeling or chipped plaster around the cracks, which is a good sign that you need to repair them.
